Demonic possession is high up on the horror list, sparking countless flicks about all that exorcist mojo. So don’t look now but here’s another one coming to saturate the market. “But what does this movie have that all the others don’t?” I hear you ask. Well, the legend that is Anthony Hopkins for a start.THE RITE, scheduled for release in the U.S. in January, is about an American priest, played by Colin O’Donoghue, who travels to Italy to go to some sort of exorcism school (yes, you read that correctly, exorcism school…) where he is taught by Anthony Hopkins character about the ways of Satan. Being a skeptic, his beliefs are put under strain when he meets a girl displaying all the signs of classic demonic possession (in movie terms that means her face contorts, and she coughs up inanimate objects).
Despite the cliched plot (no one is ever going to top THE EXORCIST now are they?), the trailer suggests a pretty classy production, with some nice acting by the leads, and some good-looking cinematography. Here at The Hollywood News the jury is out, but you never know, it may just surprise us…
